Oh, Madhouse! The company that brings us fabulous anime (Death Note, Cardcaptor Sakura) are back with another anime about a zombie apocalypse brought to us by mangaka Daisuke Satou, Highschool of the Dead! This series has caught my eye since I saw the Chartfag for this summer’s list. Zombies, zombies, and zombies! Plus, it has well-known seiyuu Mamoru Miyano as part of the cast list!
Opening: “HIGHSCHOOL OF THE DEAD” by Kishida Kyōdan & The Akeboshi Rockets
High School of the Dead is just like any zombie movie known to man. Everyone is turning into zombies, fight and fend to yourself. That’s basically what this is; however, there is ecchi involved. Meaning panty shots, breasts bouncing everywhere, and more panty shots. So this is going to be a pervert’s wet dream since it’s babes killing zombies. That’s probably what it’s going to be for the mass majority of people watching this anime will go for. Shockingly, there is a romance plot in this gore fest! Protagonist Takashi Komuro (Junichi Suwabe) has been in love with Rei Miyamoto (Marina Inoue) since they were young. They even promised each other they would get married by pinky promising, and that shit is legit. She ends up dating Hisashi Igou (Mamoru Miyano) when they get into high school, making him depressing. On the stairs, he watched his teachers get bitten by someone and runs to Rei’s classroom to get her out (how romantic!). Rei doesn’t want to leave (jerk) and he SLAPS HER ACROSS THE FACE LIKE A BOSS and her boyfriend just watches (best couple ever!). They leave the classroom and get weapons to defend themselves and Rei calls her father because he’s in the police. No answer because the lines are busy! Now they must face these zombies without the help from the police!
Rei ends up in the hands of a zombie and Hisashi saves her and ended up getting a flesh wound. Takashi learned that you can bust their heads and they’ll die (genious!) and starts bashing heads. When they got on the roof top they realized the entire city is in chaos with fires and traffic jams. They notice American self-defense crew flying in so they knew something was seriously wrong. Shortly after that, Hisashi started to die. Just like in the movies, he’ll become a zombie just from the flesh wound. He asks Takashi to kill him before he becomes a zombie and dies. Rei, being the dumbass that she is, won’t let Takashi bash his head because he’s different! Then he turned into a zombie (This girl is insanely stupid.). Takashi bashed his head and Rei is screaming at him going, “You’ve always wanted to do that to him because I was dating him!” (facexpalm) He decided to go bash some heads and she says, “STAY WITH ME!” (headxdesk) So he hugged her and said to himself, “Today I ended up killing my best friend and hugged the person I loved forever for the first time.”
Ending: “Major Doubt!” by Maon Kurosaki
Rest in peace, Hisashi. You’re currently the only character I can stand in this series, even though you dated the dumbest girl I have ever seen in an action series! I’m going to go ahead and continue watching this. The animation is gorgeous and zombies are fun to watch. Plus, this series has been licensed by Sentai Filmworks so we can expect a dubbed version of this series by early 2011.
